Thuja occidentalis

Eastern white cedar

The ubiquitous Eastern white cedar or “Arborvitae” is popular with good reason. It’s a medium sized evergreen tree with a lovely conical shape. Traditional garden centers generally only carry ‘cultivars’ of this species. Read our stance on cultivars here.

Thuja occidentalis is a favorite for planting in a group to screen the neighbors. Planted father apart, and this species will grow dense foliage. Crowded together will create a wall but the foliage will be more sparse. Either way, stands of evergreen trees provide food and cover for wildlife like birds.

Although these trees don’t grow especially rapidly, they will easily live for hundreds of years. Topping out around 50-60 feet in optimal conditions, often growing closer to 30 feet tall in a suburban setting.

Plants can be purchased in-person or online (with in-person pick-up). All online orders will be ready for pick-up 24-72 hours after purchase. You will receive an email to let you know when your order is ready. We kindly ask that you pick-up any orders within one week of purchase.
