Pinus strobus

Eastern white pine

The eastern white pine, Pinus strobus, is a tall, elegant tree that can grow up to 80 feet or more. With soft, slender, bluish-green needles and long, drooping branches, it has a graceful, almost weeping habit. It thrives in full sun and is adaptable to a wide range of soil types, from well-drained sandy loams to more fertile, moist soils. Whether planted in a backyard or lining a woodland edge, this tree will quickly become the tallest in the neighborhood.

Eastern white pines aren't just decorative; they're incredibly useful to wildlife, offering food and shelter year-round. Birds like the white-breasted nuthatch (Sitta carolinensis) and the pine siskin (Spinus pinus) depend on the seeds from the pine cones, while small mammals such as squirrels rely on both the seeds and the soft, protective bark. The tree also provides excellent nesting sites for birds, with its dense canopy offering shelter and a safe space for the young to grow.
