Alnus serrulata
Smooth alder
Smooth alder is a multi-stemmed shrub or small tree well suited to moist sites, pond edges, and streambanks. It has a natural, informal shape and thrives where soils stay consistently damp, helping stabilize shorelines and improve soil health through nitrogen fixation.
Alder seeds are eaten by finches and other small birds, and its early catkins provide pollen for bees in spring. It also supports caterpillars used as food by songbirds, making it especially valuable in restoration plantings and wetland edges.
Plants can be purchased in-person or online (with in-person pick-up).
