Echinacea purpurea
purple coneflower
This beloved species is not quite native to New England. It's one of the only plants we carry that isn't. But it's highly ecologically beneficial and gorgeous to boot. The main reason we carry it is that it is the poster child for "native plant". People who don't know native plants, at all, know that this species is native. So when you have purple coneflower in a meadow you are establishing, or in a front yard where you don't rake, people can get the signal "these are native plants". It also plays really well with other native plants.
Echinacea purpurea, purple coneflower, is a stunning and well-known species that adds vibrant color to any garden. This perennial plant reaches a height of 2 to 4 feet and should be spaced about 18 to 24 inches apart. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, making it a great addition to a sunny garden area.
Echinacea purpurea is also a favorite of goldfinches, who visit in the fall and winter to feed on the seeds, adding to its appeal for birdwatchers. With moderate water needs and minimal maintenance requirements, this beautiful and beneficial plant is a must-have for any garden.
