Betula nigra
River birch
River birch is a graceful, fast-growing tree known for its exfoliating bark and tolerance of wet soils. Naturally found along riverbanks and floodplains, it adapts well to rain gardens and low-lying areas, while still performing reliably in average garden conditions.
This species supports a wide array of wildlife. Its seeds are eaten by finches, chickadees, and other songbirds, while its foliage hosts numerous moth and butterfly larvae that feed nesting birds. River birch also provides cover and nesting habitat, making it a solid ecological anchor in larger landscapes.
