Betula nigra
River birch
Betula nigra, the river birch, is a fast-growing native tree prized for its distinctive, peeling bark that curls back in shades of salmon, cream, and brown, lending year-round visual interest. Typically reaching 40 to 70 feet in height, it flourishes in full sun and moist, acidic soils, though it tolerates a surprising range of conditions, from streambanks to upland landscapes. Its tolerance for periodic flooding makes it especially valuable in riparian restoration, where its strong root system helps reduce erosion and improve water quality. While its flowers are understated catkins, the tree more than compensates with its graceful form and textural bark, making it a favorite for both ecological function and ornamental planting. The river birch is proof that resilience and beauty often come wrapped in the same package.
