Bromus pubescens
hairy woodland brome
Hairy woodland brome is a cool-season native grass growing 2–4 feet tall with arching seedheads that lend a relaxed, natural feel. The foliage has subtle texture without flash.
It prefers partial shade and moist to average woodland soils, making it valuable in forest edges and understory plantings. Unlike many turf-forming grasses, it integrates well into diverse native communities.
It serves as a larval host for several skipper butterfly species and provides cover for woodland insects and small wildlife. In shaded systems where structure can be hard to achieve, this grass provides quiet backbone support.
