Agrostis hyemalis
tickle grass
Tickle grass is all about movement. This fine-textured native grass grows 1–3 feet tall and produces open, airy panicles in late summer that seem to hover above the foliage. In backlight, the seedheads create a soft haze effect that makes surrounding plants look even better.
It prefers full sun to light shade and dry to average, well-drained soils. It’s particularly useful in sandy or lean sites where heavier grasses struggle. Short-lived but generous with seed, it helps fill space in early meadow plantings while longer-lived species establish.
The seeds are eaten by small songbirds, and the foliage provides cover for ground-dwelling insects. It plays a classic early-successional role — light, flexible, and ecologically useful without demanding attention.
