Actaea racemosa
black cohosh
Black cohosh is a well-known perennial in the herbal medicine world, used by generations of women to treat symptoms related to menstration and menupause.
Outside of the medicinal usage, Actaea racemosa is a delightful and highly beneficial plant to add to the garden. Visually, this stunner draws the eye, with tall, white spires of fragrant flowers. The fragrance also is useful in repelling certain flying insects, hence another common name, Bugbane.
Black Cohosh is a shade-loving plant, bushy in stature and can fill in larger spaces, adding interest to a summery woodland space. The Virginia Native Plant Society named A. racemosa “Plant of the Year” in 2017 with this absolutely perfect description: “The slender wands of flowering Common Black Cohosh beckon us to explore woodlands.”
