Scrophularia lanceolata
lance-leaved figwort
Figworts don't have the showiest of flowers but they supply an incredible amount of nectar. Scrophularia species are highly recommended by the Xerces Society. They have: "special value to native bees: recognized by pollination ecologists as attracting a large numbers of native bees." Also a favorite of ruby-throated hummingbirds! Read more from Xerces Society here.
Blooming from May through July and reaching heights of 5 feet, lance-leaved figwort are very amenable from dry-moist soil, and any sun conditions. They just wont thrive in standing water.
Not only does the abundant Scrophularia nectar attract a variety of pollinators, but they are also the host plant for the caterpillars of many Checkerspot butterflies!
