Apocynum cannabinum

Dogbane

Dogbane is an underdog (pun intended) at Blue Stem Natives. It's a species most people don't think of in a cultivated setting. But take another look. It has a lot going for it...

OK first ,we'll put out the disclaimer: this guy is toxic so if you have dogs, cats, or random neighbors who like to chew on your garden plants, skip this one.

Here are some  of its better attributes:

  • Dogbane is a real stunner. Red stems and rounded large leaves make this species easily identifiable. Even the long stringy seed-pods are interesting.

  • Apocynum cannabinum is a host plant for the snowberry clearwing, which you might also know as a "hummingbird moth". A host plant is the food (in this case) for the larval/caterpillar stage of a buttefly or moth's life.

  • Historically native Americans made great use of Apocynum cannabinum fibers. Creating bows, nets, bags, and more. Another common name for Apocynum cannabinum is Indian hemp.

  • Ok one last thing to try to convince you....Apocynum cannabinum has been used effectively in phytoremediation clearing lead from soils. "Phytoremediation is a general term for several ways in which plants are used to remediate sites by removing pollutants from soil and water. Plants can degrade organic pollutants or contain and stabilize metal contaminants by acting as filters or traps." EPA website

Plants can be purchased in-person or online (with in-person pick-up). All online orders will be ready for pick-up 24-72 hours after purchase. You will receive an email to let you know when your order is ready. We kindly ask that you pick-up any orders within one week of purchase.
