Plant information

Culver's root is an extremely showy perennial wildflower with fabulous whorled leaves. During the summer this species blooms: small white florets arranged on spike-like racemes. Adding this unusual plant to your garden gives your planting area height, strong vertical lines, and texture.

V. virginicum reaches 3-7' tall and is easy to grow in average to wet soils. It thrives in full sun but also tolerates light shade. Too much shade will cause the flower spikes to flop over! This plant is slow to establish but well worth the wait.

A nice companion plant is Verbena hastata. The white flowers of V. virginicum mixed with the purple of Verbena hastata is a great combination. V. virginicum foliage is unpalatable to deer and other herbivores.
