Pluchea odorata var. succulenta, also known as sweetscent, blooms in late summer with clusters of small, purple-pink flowers. These blooms are a magnet for pollinators and create a lovely, airy effect in wetland gardens. This plant has a bushy, upright growth habit, reaching about 2 to 4 feet tall. It prefers moist, slightly wet soils and thrives in full sun to part shade. If you have a damp area or a marshy spot, this plant will flourish without much fuss. It can handle some standing water, making it perfect for rain gardens or areas that stay a little soggy.

Native wildlife loves this plant. It acts as a host plant for several species of insects, including the common checkered skipper (Pyrgus communis) and the silvery checkerspot (Chlosyne nycteis). These butterflies lay their eggs on the plant, and their caterpillar larvae feed on the leaves. Those caterpillars in turn feed hungry baby birds! Birds like the red-winged blackbird and common yellowthroat also benefit from its presence, using it as shelter or foraging on its seeds.

Sweescent is salt-tolerant which makes it an excellent choice for coastal gardens or areas that experience salt spray. Not only does it thrive in wet conditions, but it can also handle the challenges of salty environments. It’s a versatile plant that adds both beauty and function to your garden while helping out local wildlife.
