Plant information
They don’t come much more descriptive than the aptly named narrow-leaved mountain mint! This aromatic perennial has many very narrow, needle-like leaves that release a sweet minty aroma when crushed.
The small white flowers are clustered at the top of a tall, stiff, stem, and have tiny purple spots on the petals. Thanks to the long blooming season, bees and other pollinators are sustained with nectar and pollen into the early fall.
Mountain Mint is able to withstand fairly intense conditions, growing in the sunniest and driest area of your yard. According to GoBotany.org, “The Cherokee were known to use the leaves as a poultice to treat headaches, and internally to treat colds, fever, and upset stomach.” The leaves can also be rubbed on the skin to repel biting insects.
