Plant information
Sideoats grama is a striking, drought-tolerant native grass known for its distinctive flowering spikes that hang gracefully to one side of the stem—hence the name. Each stem bears rows of tiny, oat-like florets that turn a soft reddish hue in midsummer before maturing to golden brown. Its fine blue-green foliage and upright form add texture and movement to sunny landscapes.
A warm-season grass, Bouteloua curtipendula thrives in hot, dry sites and poor soils where many grasses struggle. It forms tidy clumps rather than spreading aggressively, making it ideal for meadows, prairie-style gardens, and restoration plantings. Its deep root system helps stabilize soil, and its seeds provide valuable food for songbirds while the foliage supports several species of grass skippers.
Sideoats grama pairs beautifully with butterfly milkweed, black-eyed Susan, and little bluestem, adding subtle color and structure to low-maintenance native plantings.
