Quercus palustris
pin/swamp oak
Pin oak is a fast-growing, handsome tree with a strong, upright shape that adds structure to larger landscapes. Naturally found in moist, acidic soils, it excels in low areas and is particularly well suited to rain gardens or sites that stay wet longer than most. Its finely cut leaves and tidy form give it a slightly more formal look than some other native oaks.
Ecologically, pin oak offers the same powerhouse benefits as its relatives, supporting a huge diversity of insects and producing acorns that sustain wildlife. Its tolerance for wetter soils makes it especially useful as we design landscapes that can handle changing climate conditions.
