Carex tribuloides

blunt broom sedge

Blunt broom sedge adds texture to your garden. In late spring or early summer, it produces small, yellowish-brown blooms that appear in clusters. These blooms are a bit of a backdrop to the rest of the plant but still worth noting. Neat clumps of arching green blades, reaching up to 3 feet tall, and thriving in moist, well-drained soils, blunt broom sedge prefers full sun to part sun. It doesn't mind some wet feet, either, so it can handle areas with periodic standing water.

This sedge is a great choice for attracting local wildlife. It serves as a host plant for several species of skippers and butterflies, like the Northern broken-dash (Wallengrenia egeremet) and the Peck's skipper (Polites peckius). It also provides cover and shelter for birds like the veery and wood thrush. If you plant this expect it to offer a safe haven for creatures seeking a quiet spot. The dense clumps offer protection, and the seeds may even feed some of these critters through the winter months.

Carex tribuloides is often used in erosion control along streambanks or shady, wet areas. It's not just a pretty face in your garden, it's a workhorse too, providing stability to the landscape while offering wildlife a place to thrive.
