Salix eriocephala
heart shaped willow
Heartleaf willow is one of the earliest signs that spring is on its way. Its fuzzy catkins appear very early, providing crucial pollen and nectar for bees emerging from winter. This fast-growing native shrub or small tree thrives in moist to wet soils and is especially useful along streambanks, in rain gardens, or anywhere water tends to linger.
Its dense roots make it excellent for stabilizing slopes and managing erosion, and it supports a wide range of wildlife throughout the season. While it can spread by suckering, that enthusiasm is often an asset in large or challenging sites where quick establishment and resilience are key.
