Trillium erectum
red trillium
Hard to grow and hard to find! And yup...that price is correct!
Red trillium thrives in rich, well-draining, moist soil, making it perfect for shaded spots beneath trees or along the edge of woodlands. Whether you’re planting it in a woodland garden or creating a little shady nook, this plant loves filtered sunlight and prefers to stay out of full sun. In the spring, the red trillium's blooms emerge in a delicate, striking shade of red (or sometimes deep maroon), sitting just above the leaves in groups of three. These flowers can last for several weeks, offering a refreshing burst of color when the world around it is just waking up.
Wildlife finds this plant quite appealing as well. Small mammals like the eastern gray squirrel may munch on its leaves, while white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) have been known to nibble on the foliage too, especially when other food sources are scarce in early spring.
After blooming, it produces a seed that ants will carry off, helping with seed dispersion. Birds, such as the eastern towhee (Pipilo erythrophthalmus), may use the plant's shaded cover for nesting.
