Sporobolus compositus

rough dropseed

Rough dropseed is a warm-season bunchgrass reaching 2–4 feet tall with narrow foliage and fine-textured seedheads that emerge in late summer.

It thrives in full sun and dry, well-drained soils and tolerates poor conditions. Its deep root system contributes to soil stabilization and drought resilience.

Seeds are eaten by birds, and the clumps provide cover for insects and small wildlife. In meadow plantings, it adds structure without heaviness.
