Solidago bicolor
White goldenrod, or silverrod shares few characteristics with others in the Solidago species, namely the height of the flower stalks, the preference for full sun and drier soil, and the special value to native bees.
Solidago bicolor is the only goldenrod in this area that has white flowers, and the blossoms climb the stem in a spiral formation, rather than sit atop in an umbrella shape like its yellow cousins. The late-summer, bell-shaped blossoms are attractive to butterflies, bees, and birds love the seeds that result.
The sap of the goldenrod is toxic to mammals, so deer and rabbits avoid this plant, making it a highly beneficial one to have in your garden without much care.
