Sisyrinchium atlanticum
Eastern blue-eyed-grass
Sisyrinchium atlanticum, known as Eastern Blue-eyed Grass, is a delicate, grass-like perennial in the Iris family that inhabits moist meadows, open woods, and coastal plains throughout New England. It prefers full sun to light shade and thrives in acidic, sandy to loamy soils with consistent moisture.
Though it resembles a grass, it is a true monocot with striking blue-violet flowers that attract a variety of native pollinators, particularly small bees such as Halictus and Lasioglossum spp., which forage for nectar and pollen.
S. atlanticum integrates well with other moisture-tolerant, sun-loving native species such as Lobelia cardinalis (Cardinal Flower), Carex stricta (Tussock Sedge), and Juncus effusus (Common Rush), forming part of rich wetland and meadow plant communities. While its seeds may be consumed occasionally by small birds such as Melospiza georgiana (Swamp Sparrow), its primary ecological role lies in supporting native pollinators and contributing to the structural and floral diversity of New England’s wetland margins.
