Mitella diphylla
Fairy cup/bishop's cap
How could you not love a plant called “fairy cups”. The flowers, which up-close look like snowflakes, are just as adorable as the name. This species is similar in form and habit to everyone’s favorite heartleaved foamflower (Tiarella cordifolia). A great shade garden addition with full dense foliage, this perennial spreads by rhizomes. While not a quick spreader, this is a unique addition to your garden.
Found naturally in dappled shade in average soils. It’s amenable to most soil types from dry to moist. Seeds of Mitella diphylla are spread by “splash-cup dispersal” which is exactly as it sounds. Shiny small black seeds are stored in the cup shaped fruit capsules until hit by raindrops. The splash of the raindrop spreads the seeds!
Fairy cups are a pollen and nectar source for our small native pollinators.
