Antennaria howellii

small pussytoes

Antenaria howellii is a hardy perennial native to the rocky and dry soils of New England. It typically grows in well-drained, sandy or gravelly soil, preferring sunny, open habitats like grasslands, meadows, and roadsides. This plant thrives in full sun and can handle some drought, making it a perfect fit for areas that are a bit too dry or breezy for more delicate plants. With its low, mat-forming habit, it seldom grows taller than 4 inches, making it a subtle but tough groundcover in its native habitat.

For wildlife, Antennaria howellii is a quiet but important contributor. It provides nectar for a variety of pollinators, including the moth Euchlaena rhododactyla, whose larvae feed on the leaves of the plant. It’s also a favorite of the common checkered-skipper (Pyrgus communis), a butterfly whose caterpillars munch on the plant’s foliage.
