Viburnum lantanoides

Hobblebush

Viburnum lantanoides, hobblebush, is one of the signature shrubs of northeastern forests, forming broad, arching thickets beneath the canopy. Growing 6–12 feet tall, it is easily recognized in spring by its striking flat-topped flower clusters—showy sterile white flowers around the edge with smaller fertile flowers in the center.

Hobblebush thrives in partial to full shade and moist to average woodland soils, often along cool forest slopes, ravines, and stream corridors. In New England it commonly grows with woodland associates such as Acer saccharum, Fagus grandifolia, Tsuga canadensis, Ostrya virginiana, and understory species like Maianthemum canadense and Dryopteris spp.

Ecologically, hobblebush is a powerhouse for wildlife. The flowers attract a variety of native pollinators, including Andrena, Halictus, and other early-season bees, while the foliage supports several moth and butterfly larvae. By late summer the shrub produces clusters of red fruits that mature to deep purple-black and are eaten by birds such as American robin, hermit thrush, and ruffed grouse.

Its long arching branches often root where they touch the ground, creating dense tangles that provide excellent cover for forest wildlife—sometimes even tripping passing hikers, which explains the memorable name “hobblebush.”
