Nannyberry is a tall shrub that provides year-round interest. In the Spring, dark green foliage appears along with lovely white flower clusters. The blossoms give way to large blue-black berries, which are a favorite of birds. In the Fall, the leaves turn a gorgeous deep wine-red color, and the birds will continue to feast on the berries throughout the winter (they are edible for humans too!).
This shrub spreads by roots and makes a perfect screening hedge. It can be maintained in a tree shape by trimming lower branches and removing suckering roots. Ideally you will want more than one Viburnum lentago if you are looking for a more bountiful fruit harvest.
