Aralia nudicaulis (Wild Sarsaparilla)
Aralia nudicaulis, commonly known as Wild Sarsaparilla, is an unassuming but ecologically rich herbaceous perennial native to the shaded understories of New England’s hardwood and mixed forests. It thrives in dappled to full shade and favors moist, well-drained, acidic soils rich in organic matter—often forming loose colonies through underground rhizomes.
While subtle in appearance, with its umbrella-like leaves and low, spherical flower clusters, it plays well with classic woodland companions such as Maianthemum canadense (Canada Mayflower), Polystichum acrostichoides (Christmas Fern), and Clintonia borealis (Bluebead Lily).
Pollinated primarily by small native bees and flies, its flowers quietly support a range of early-season insects. But the real draw for wildlife comes later—its dark purple berries, ripening in midsummer, are relished by birds like Catharus fuscescens (Veery) and Turdus migratorius (American Robin). Aralia nudicaulis is one of those forest-floor plants that asks for little but gives back in quiet abundance.
