Symphyotrichum puniceum

Purple-stemmed aster

Symphyotrichum puniceum is known for its vibrant purple flowers that bloom in late summer to fall. It thrives in moist, well-drained soils, making it ideal for rain gardens, meadows, or wetlands. This aster prefers full sun but can tolerate light shade, although it may not flower as abundantly in the latter. It is highly adaptable and can grow in a variety of soil types, including sandy, loamy, or clay soils, as long as they retain moisture. It typically reaches heights of 3 to 5 feet, creating a bold display in the garden with its tall, branching stems and clusters of small, daisy-like blooms.

Purple-stemmed aster is an important plant for local wildlife, providing nectar and habitat for a variety of species. Native bees, like the common eastern bumblebee (Bombus impatiens), are particularly attracted to its flowers, collecting pollen and nectar. Additionally, butterflies such as the painted lady (Vanessa cardui) and the monarch (Danaus plexippus) use it as a vital nectar source during their migration periods. Birds, especially seed-eating species like the American goldfinch (Spinus tristis), are drawn to its seeds, which are abundant after the flowers fade in the fall.
