Packera obovata
running groundsel
Packera obovata, running groundsel, is a perennial plant that grows up to about 18" in height and spreads vigorously through underground rhizomes. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and well-drained, moist soil.
The yellow flowers of running groundsel bloom in the early to mid-spring and provide a valuable early nectar source for native bees, butterflies, and birds. This plant serves as a host plant for several butterfly species, such as the eastern tailed-blue and the painted lady, and attracts birds like the northern flicker and yellow-rumped warbler.
Its spreading habit makes it an excellent choice for naturalizing in a woodland or meadow garden, providing important wildlife habitat throughout the growing season.
