Scutellaria incana
downy skullcap
If you’re looking for a plant that brings a "sea of blue foam" to your late-summer garden, look no further than Downy Skullcap. Standing a sturdy 2–3 feet tall, this beauty is a real showstopper with its branching spires of amethyst-blue, snapdragon-like flowers that pop against silvery, soft-to-the-touch stems. It’s one of the showiest skullcaps out there and a total magnet for bumblebees and hummingbirds during that July-to-September lull. Best of all, it’s remarkably unfussy—thriving in everything from open meadows to dry woodland edges—and its bitter foliage means deer and rabbits usually give it a hard pass.
