Eutrochium dubium
Eutrochium dubium might just be one of our favorite of the Joe-Pye species. Known as coastal Joe-Pye weed, this is one of the shortest Joe-pye weeds, perfect for the home landscape. A common complaint of Joe-pye is how (we think wonderfully) tall they can get, and many people give them a late spring chop to keep their height in check. Coastal Joe-Pye saves you the trouble, as it usually maxes out around 4 feet tall.
Another excellent quality is its remarkable shade tolerance. Where the other species prefer full sun, E. dubium will grow quite happily in part shade conditions. The seed heads are delightful, large poofs of grey-white floof atop stout stems. They would make an excellent addition to a dried flower arrangement, at least until the wind-dispersed seeds start to float around!
The seeds are not easily separated from the fluffy chaff, however, it is not necessary to separate them before sowing. This is a good thing, because these seeds are persistent in their quest to find a resting place. You will be covered in Joe-Pye seeds, fair warning!
