Asclepias purpurascens (purple milkweed)

Purple milkweed is a quietly elegant member of the milkweed family, with rich rose-purple flower clusters that feel a bit more refined than its louder cousins. Native to open woodlands and meadow edges, it prefers well-drained soils and partial sun, making it a great choice for gardeners who want to support wildlife without committing to a full-on meadow look. It’s slower to establish than common milkweed, but it settles in beautifully and stays neat over time.

Like all milkweeds, it plays a critical role as a host plant for monarch caterpillars, while its flowers offer nectar to a variety of native pollinators. Because it’s well-behaved and not prone to spreading, purple milkweed fits comfortably into more intentional garden designs while still doing important ecological work.

Plants can be purchased in-person or online (with in-person pick-up).
