Prunella vulgaris v. lanceolata

Common selfheal, also known as heal-all, is an important plant for insects. The flowers are visited by long-tongued bees, short-tongued bees, and small butterflies. Bee visitors include bumblebees and small native bees including green metallic bees. Self-heal is the larval host for the Clouded sulphur butterfly (its caterpillars eat the leaves to grow and live).

Self-heal is a long blooming, short, herbaceous perennial that thrives as a lawn replacement or adorable groundcover. It's a very adaptable plant and will tolerate many soil condtions but is best in well drained soils. Thrives in sun to part sun.

P. vulgaris is edible and can be enjoyed in soups and salads. The young leaves and stems can be eaten raw, althoughh the leaves can be somewhat bitter from tannins which can be removed by washing. A cold tea with the freshly chopped leaves is delicious.

This plant is easy to grow, and can become rather weedy and aggressive.

Why "selfheal"? This plant has been used relieve muscle pain and to treat various physical ailments.
