Aronia melanocarpa var. depressa

dwarf black chokeberry

This groundcover is not common…as evidenced by a lack of information out on the world-wide-internets. One would assume this drawf version of black chokeberry has similar attributes to the full grown Aronia melanocarpa. Lovely fall color, edible berries (better cooked and with sugar added), and preferring full sun and moist soils. However, some resources report this groundcover also grows well in dry rocky outcrops.

We can tell you from our experience growing these in pots that the fall color is indeed beautiful and in year one these grew about 4” in height. Some reports say that Aronia melanocarpa var. Depressa grows to about 18” in height. If you plants these we’d love to hear reports of how they grow for you.
