Spiraea tomentosa
Steeplebush is well named, for the tall spires of bright pink blossom clusters form a distinct steeple shape atop strong wand-like stems.
This woody perennial prefers moist, rich soils, but it’s height and visual appearance make it well suited to a foundation garden or as a border in a low-lying area that has moist soil. The spent flowerheads can be pinched to encourage more blossoms, and as this plant blooms on new growth it can be pruned as desired in the late winter.
Spirea tomentosa is the larval host plant for the New England Buck Moth.
