Sorghastrum nutans

Yellow prairie grass

Yellow prairie grass is a robust and striking native grass that’s perfect for adding texture and movement to your garden. It thrives in full sun and loves well-drained soil, so it’s a great choice for those sunny spots with a bit of a breeze. Its tall, arching leaves and golden, feathery seed heads make it an eye-catching focal point during the summer and fall. As the season progresses, the blooms turn a beautiful, warm golden color, creating a soft, shimmering effect that really catches the light. It's not too fussy about soil types, making it an easygoing plant for various landscapes.

This plant is a wildlife-friendly powerhouse. It provides valuable food and cover for a variety of New England critters. For example, Sorghastrum nutans is a go-to for birds like the eastern meadowlark (Sturnella magna), which loves to perch on its tall stems and find insects. The seeds are a favorite snack for sparrows, especially the song sparrow (Melospiza melodia). Small mammals, such as the eastern cottontail rabbit (Sylvilagus floridanus), also benefit from the grass's dense growth, which offers shelter from predators.

Yellow prairie grass is known for its dramatic autumn transformation, where the foliage shifts to deep red and bronze tones before it goes dormant for the winter, making it an eye-catching addition even after its blooming season.
