Plant information:
Hairy beardtongue gets its name from the fine hairs that grow along the upright stem, as well as those that appear on the fifth stamen of each flower. It is an excellent choice for a native plant garden, attracting all manners of pollinators, serving as the larval host plant for the Baltimore Checkerspot.
The late springtime blooms are trumpet-shaped and a beautiful lavender color. Adaptable to soils ranging from medium-wet to dry and from full sun to part shade, there are few locations that wouldn’t work for a colony of Penstamon hirsutus.
Noted as a species of concern in Massachusetts, be sure not to disturb any wild colonies found, and keep the seeds from your plants in personal garden locations.
