Plant Information

Panicum virgatum, or switchgrass, adds an excellent multi-season texture to the landscape. Tall, vase-shaped clumps of upright grass topped with fluffy tufts of seed heads that turn purplish-red in the summer.

We highly recommend NOT cutting this beauty down in the fall as the birds will flock to this grass throughout the winter, and the blade clumps provide valuable habitat to a variety of wildlifeP. virgatum is the larval host plant for the Delaware Skipper and Dotted Skipper, as well as supports other butterflies and moths.
