Plant information
Pale jewelweed is a cheerful, moisture-loving annual found along streambanks, woodland edges, and low, shaded thickets. Its soft, translucent stems and pale yellow, trumpet-shaped flowers bring gentle color to damp summer landscapes. Flowers dangle delicately from slender stalks and are rich in nectar, attracting hummingbirds, bumblebees, and long-tongued butterflies throughout the season.
A close relative of the more orange-flowered spotted jewelweed (Impatiens capensis), I. pallida tends to grow slightly taller and prefers cooler, shadier, and wetter sites. It reseeds readily in suitable conditions but is not aggressive.
Ecologically, pale jewelweed provides important late-summer nectar when other woodland flowers have faded, and its juicy stems are a favorite of browsing insects and deer. It’s an excellent choice for rain gardens, shaded wet areas, and the edges of ponds or streams, where it adds a natural, glowing softness.
