Plant information
Downy wood-mint is one of those plants that may have been an inspiration for some of Dr. Seuss’ drawings. Lilac colored flowers are arranged in circular stacks atop a sturdy square stem, and reach around a foot tall.
Bees love this plant, and you will likely see some very interesting pollinators visiting during it’s early summer bloom. As with others in the mint family, deer and rabbits tend to leave this one alone.
B. ciliata can grow in sandy soils, as well as tolerates very acidic soil, which makes it a great choice near pines and cedars.
The leaves have a lovely minty flavor and can be used raw or steeped as a tea. Historically, Native People used the leaves as a poultice to treat headaches.
