Plant information
White Snakeroot is a long-blooming herbaceous perennial that is most often found along wooded edges of disturbed land, especially around powerline clearings and thickets. As it prefers shady areas, the tiny panicles of white blossoms stand out and are often fragrant.
As this plant blooms in late summer well into fall, it is a valuable support for our native pollinators. For those desperate for deer resistant plants, this is a great one to add.
It comes by it’s common name “Snakeroot” from the mistaken idea that the fluid from the stems of this plant could cure snakebites. This is very much not the case, and the plant is actually highly toxic to mammals. This plant should not be used in or near grazing animals. Mammalian herbivores such as deer tend to avoid the toxic foliage of this plant, so it can stick around to produce plenty of nectar and pollen for bees, butterflies, and moths!
