Hypericum prolificum

Shrubby St. John's wort

 

Although not *quite* native to New England, we felt this shrub was well worth carrying at Blue Stem. It has high ecological value for our local pollinators and other wildlife. Plus…it’s an absolutely stunning shrub. We humans are important too.

 

Shrubby St. John's wort is a “prolific” (Hypericum prolificum after all) long-blooming shrub with an abundance of bright yellow flowers set against dark green leaves. Generally about 2-4 feet tall and equally as wide. Not a particularly fast growing species, but slow and steady often wins the race. Use this one en masse for a dramatic show. 

 

A pretty adaptable species, from sun to part sun and dry to moist soil. It is rabbit and deer resistant as well.

 

According to research by Dr. Robert Gegear, Hypericum prolificum Supports at-risk insects. It is a pollen source for the at-risk yellow-banded bumblebees (B. terricola) and half-black bumblebees (B. vagans). Don’t cut down the dried seed heads and they will bring the winter birds to your yard.
