Euthamia caroliniana

slender goldentop, also known as coastal-plain grass leaved golderod

You probably know about the incredible pollinator value of goldenrod, but you have been hesitant to grow it in your yard for fear it will take over. Luckily for us, there are a few native species that have incredible ecological value but are not aggressive or overwhelming.

Not quite a true goldenrod, coastal-plain grass leaved golderod is one such species. Also known as slender goldentop, this particular lovely has slender leaves (mhm.) and tiny yellow flowers in a flat-topped cluster. Euthamia caroliniana differs from other goldenrod in that it loves the water. This plant grows best in open wetlands, and would work perfectly as a sunny pond plant or in the rain garden. It is also an excellent choice for swales and culverts.

All of our native goldenrods and like species are so important to the survival of our native bee species, as they provide high quality pollen and nectar sources late into the fall, as well as habitat for overwintering in their firm, hollow stems.

Euthamia caroliniana is an important species when it comes to succession, as its seeds are considered persistant, and form a seed bank in the soil that can withstand regular fire pressure. The seed heads are ready for collection when the flowers turn a whispy white, and care should be taken to collect before they are dispersed by the wind. A net bag placed over the drying seed head can aid in collection. Be sure to leave plenty for the birds! Best germinated through direct sowing in the fall, these seeds require cold, moist stratification.
