Drymocallis arguta
Tall wood beauty
Tall wood beauty blooms in late spring to early summer, producing delicate, white flowers. These blooms appear in clusters, resembling little jewels, and attract attention from anyone who passes by. The plant has a relaxed, upright habit, growing around 2 feet tall. It prefers full sun to partial shade, and once established, it can handle some drought.
Tall wood beauty serves as an important nectar source for a variety of insects, including butterflies like the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio glaucus) and the Common Buckeye (Junonia coenia). It’s also a favored spot for small pollinators like bees, including the native bee species Bombus impatiens. Additionally, its foliage can attract caterpillars and other insects that serve as food for birds such as the Northern Cardinal and the Gray Catbird, making it a great addition for those looking to support their local bird population.
Fun fact: The name "arguta" refers to the plant’s finely serrated leaf edges, which might remind you of the sharpness of a tiny saw.
