Anemone canadensis
If you are battling invasive plants in your yard, it is recommended to plant natives right after you clear an area that can help out-compete the invasive. Anemone canadensis, or Canada Anemone, can be just that plant if you have an area of moist, rich soil in partial shade to full sun. Think…wooded edge that gets a lot of leaf dump in the fall.
There are many benefits to using the Anemone canadensis in the fight against invasives. This native spreads quickly by rhizomes, and while you might want to rethink placing it in your front garden beds, you definitely want a native plant that can hold it’s own against stubborn outsiders.
Perfect for naturalizing moist areas, it is also a very cute, flowering plant with bright green leaves that add great texture to the landscape. You will see sweet 2-inch white flowers starting in May standing atop stems that can range from 5-30 inches.
Most of the time these are avoided by deer and rabbits as the leaves are known to be an irritant. (Same goes for household mammals!)
