Agalinis purpurea
purple false foxglove
Purple false foxglove, is one of those understated native plants that quietly steals the show in late summer. Slender stems rise 1–3 feet tall, dotted with delicate tubular purple flowers that look almost too elegant for such a tough annual.
It thrives in sunny, wet to average soils and has a fascinating ecological twist: it’s a hemiparasite, tapping lightly into the roots of nearby plants (usually grasses) for extra nutrients. In natural areas and gardens alike, those soft lavender blooms are magnets for bees, especially long-tongued native species that can reach the nectar tucked inside the flower.
