Carex appalachica
Appalachian sedge
Carex appalachica, commonly known as Appalachian sedge, is a perennial sedge, native to the eastern United States. It blooms in early to mid spring, producing small, inconspicuous flowers that give way to attractive brown seed spikes. This sedge grows to be about 12 inches tall and spreads to form a low, dense ground cover. It thrives in partially shaded to fully shaded areas and prefers moist, well-drained soil.
Appalachian sedge is a favorite of many species of bumblebees, sweat bees, and mining bees due to its early bloom time and high nectar production. Additionally, various species of skippers, swallowtails, and fritillary butterflies are attracted to this plant. Appalachian sedge is also a host plant for several moth species.
