Acer pensylvanicum
Striped maple
Acer pensylvanicum is a small understory tree native to the cool, moist forests of New England. It prefers partial to full shade and thrives in rich, well-drained, acidic soils, often on north-facing slopes or in ravines where organic matter accumulates. As a shade-tolerant species, A. pensylvanicum is typically found in association with other deciduous hardwoods and shade-loving understory plants such as Betula alleghaniensis (Yellow Birch), Tsuga canadensis (Eastern Hemlock), Arisaema triphyllum (Jack-in-the-Pulpit), and Maianthemum racemosum (False Solomon’s Seal). The tree’s flowers provide nectar for early-emerging insects. Although A. pensylvanicum is not a major host plant for Lepidoptera, it supports generalist herbivores and contributes critical structure and forage to northeastern forest ecosystems.
