Ammophila breviligulata
American beach grass
American beach grass is one of our more specialized plants, suitable for sand dune restoration and salt, brackish, and some freshwater shorelines.
The especially deep root systems of beach grass allows it to anchor dune and slopes, able to resist high winds and occasional flooding. As colonies of grass expand, the root system grows both vertically and horizontally, creating a mesh that holds shifting sands together, making it an incredibly important plant in restoring and protecting dunes .
You may be able to grow this plant outside of it’s seaside parameters, but it is sucesptible to nematodes in more “normal” soil conditions. A great spot for this might be as a hellstrip planting, or roadside in a very sandy location, as it can handle salt load from the road.
Visually, the stiff, bright green grass leaves form a striking clump, and the tall spike of fluffy seed heads add visual interest as well as food for small seaside birds.
Plants can be purchased in-person or online (with in-person pick-up).
All online orders will be ready for pick-up 24-72 hours after purchase. You will receive an email to let you know when your order is ready. We kindly ask that you pick-up any orders within one week of purchase.
